Having a tooth extracted is never pleasant and often it can mean the loss of bone. Now

researchers in France are trialing a new type of gel filling that is made from calcium. It’s

hoped this could promote new bone growth in the dental extraction site, preventing

complications in the future. The idea is that the new gel filling will be inserted into the

empty socket once the natural tooth has been extracted with the idea of helping to

promote new bone growth which would lower the risk of bone loss in the jawbone. Bone

loss is a real problem after dental extraction and if you have multiple teeth extracted it

can affect your appearance, making it look as if your facial features are collapsing

inwards due to the lack of support for your cheeks and lips. In addition, bone loss can

complicate further treatments to replace missing teeth, in particular dental implants.

This new gel is only being trialed at the moment and it’s made from a special type of

calcium phosphate granules, with the aim of stimulating the body to produce new bone

cells. Six months after the filling has been placed, it should have been absorbed into the

empty socket which by that time will be filled with new bone.

Atraumatic Dental Extraction: A Gentler Way

One of the problems with dental extraction is that unless they are carried out extremely

carefully they can often damage the surrounding bone. This is why Dr. Navid Rahmani

practices atraumatic tooth extraction which are a far gentler way of removing teeth.

This type of dental extraction aims to preserve the maximum amount of

bone surrounding the tooth making it much easier to place dental implants in the future.

It is quite a different way of removing teeth and does require specialized tools and

training. It also tends to be nicer for patients as it’s less invasive and is probably well

worth considering if you feel a bit nervous about having teeth removed. This type of

dental extraction is ideal, particularly if you do intend to have dental implants in the

future. Instead of extracting the tooth by wiggling it out, the tooth is removed vertically,

creating minimal damage to the bone around the tooth. Of course it might sometimes be

necessary to still place additional bone.

When Are Bone Grafts Necessary?

Atraumatic tooth extraction are excellent for preserving healthy bone, but if you have

advanced gum disease then it’s quite possible some of this bone may already have been

destroyed. In this case it would still be necessary to place a bone graft. Dr. Rahmani is

extremely experienced at placing bone grafts and can use the most suitable materials for

your needs. Even though this new gel calcium filling might not yet be available there are

still plenty of extremely advanced materials that can help promote the growth of new

bone and often they can be placed at the same time as a dental implant, reducing

overall treatment time for this procedure.
