An Atraumatic Tooth Extraction. What Is It?

An Atraumatic Tooth Extraction. What Is It

This might almost sound as if it is a contradiction as many people find the thought of tooth loss quite a traumatic experience, even though the actual process is kept completely pain-free. So what is meant by an atraumatic tooth extraction? In fact this is a technique that is specifically designed to remove teeth using specialized tools while causing minimal damage or trauma to the surrounding bone and tissues. It is perhaps better described as being minimally invasive, which is something that will certainly appeal to anyone faced with tooth loss, and is the technique we use wherever possible at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery.

Why Is an Atraumatic Tooth Extraction Advantageous?

This is highly advantageous as it helps ensure the maximum amount of bone is preserved so it is much easier to place dental implants either immediately or at a later date after healing. It helps to preserve the maximum width and height of the jawbone, and this gentle technique can be more acceptable to nervous patients. There is less risk of damage to the bone, the surrounding gum tissue and to other structures nearby such as the nerves. This can result in far better results once the tooth has been restored with a dental implant.

How Is It Done?

Conventional tooth extraction techniques use ordinary forceps to almost wobble the tooth out of its socket, utilizing horizontal forces to extract it. If you have ever had a tooth extracted in a conventional manner then you may well have heard a loud cracking sound as it suddenly became loose. Atraumatic tooth extraction only uses vertical forces to remove the tooth (think of the way you would use a corkscrew to remove the cork from a bottle of wine), preserving the socket and surrounding bone. The technique can even work on teeth that are broken down and which haven’t been crowned, or which have vertical fractures running the length of the tooth.

Is Atraumatic Tooth Extraction Suitable for All Tooth Extractions?

No, but Dr. Navid Rahmani will examine the tooth requiring extraction and will certainly recommend this method whenever he can. Sometimes it might still be necessary to build up the bone in preparation for an implant, and it may be possible for this to be done at the same time as the extraction or to even have the implant at the same time as the atraumatic tooth extraction.

Will I Be Left with an Unsightly Gap Afterwards?

No, as we will make sure you have some sort of replacement tooth. Wherever possible we will place the dental implant at the same time, and will provide you with a temporary tooth while the implant heals and fully integrates with your jawbone. We certainly don’t leave our patients with an unsightly gap after tooth extraction as the whole aim is to ensure the entire process is minimally invasive and easy to cope with.

If you are faced with tooth loss and want to replace your teeth in the least traumatic way possible, why not ask Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery for more information about atraumatic tooth extractions and immediate dental implants in Midtown Manhattan? A consultation with Dr. Rahmani should be sufficient to discover if this technique will work for you.
