A recent Swedish study has looked at the risk of dental implant complications and problems as Sweden is one of the countries with the highest number of implants per capita. The study is particularly interesting as it looks at the biological complications that can arise as a result of dental implant treatment.

These dental implant complications include peri-implantitis where the tissues around the implant post can become inflamed, resulting in the loss of the jaw bone supporting the implant. Initially the study looked at the results of a questionnaire and found a high degree of satisfaction amongst those who had opted for dental implants, particularly amongst those who were older and amongst men.

Swedish Study Analyzes the Risk of Implant Complications

In spite of this, a total of nearly 600 patients at 37 clinics in Sweden were examined at a nine-year follow-up and it was found that 7.6% of patients had lost at least one implant and 14.5% had developed peri-implantitis. Patients who had periodontal disease were at an increased risk of developing severe peri-implantitis, and both gum disease and smokers were associated with implant loss.

The study found that peri-implantitis seemed to develop within the first few years after a dental implant procedure before progressing quite quickly. While this study might seem to be alarming for anyone who is considering dental implants, it’s worth remembering that dental implants do have a very high success rate and that you don’t have to develop peri-implantitis.

Dental Implant Complications and Problems; Risk Reducing

Here at the Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery we take every precaution to minimize risks of dental implant complications and problems during implant procedures and anyone having this treatment is provided with all the information needed to maintain healthy dental implants for many years afterwards. Before we even begin any dental implant treatment, we assess every person very carefully for their suitability for this procedure.

The study mentioned existing periodontal disease and smoking as being risk factors and our periodontist Dr. Navid Rahmani will help you with any existing gum disease treatment. Also highly recommends quitting smoking before treatment begins. Every implant procedure is very thoroughly planned to ensure each implant is inserted in precisely the right position to give excellent aesthetic and functional results.

Dental Implant Surgery Recovery, NYC

After surgery is completed, we will make sure you are provided with all the information you need to care for the surgery site while your implant heals and integrates with your jawbone. Once the implant has been restored with your new tooth then it’s important that you are committed to maintaining a healthy mouth to avoid any dental implant complications and problems. Without proper oral care the chances of developing peri-implantitis or other dental implants complications are greatly increased. It’s vital to brush at least twice daily and you must floss thoroughly around each implant. This isn’t particularly tricky to do and we can show you precisely how to carry out this essential yet quick daily task.

It’s also important that you come back to see us for regular checkups and professional cleanings so we can make sure the implants are thoroughly cleaned and we can check their condition. Peri-implantitis is serious condition so we do recommend contacting us if you feel there is something wrong with your implant or if you begin to notice the gum tissue around the implant looks inflamed or becomes painful. Sometimes with prompt treatment it is possible to save the implant.

Dr. Rahmani is the best periodontist and dental implant specialist in NYC, implant expert and one of a few implant dentists in NYC to offer the newest and the most advanced dental implant techniques for placing tooth implants. He is a Board Certified Periodontist sited in prominent media outlets.

Our state of the art NYC periodontal facility equipped with the most advanced equipment available in USA including latest lasers & high precision microscopes. We use only the best quality medical grade titanium or titanium alloy for dental implants.

People with dentures will often sleep in dentures, imagining that it will not do any harm. Unfortunately this isn’t the case and wearing dentures continuously can place pressure on the gums and on the bony ridge beneath them that used to support teeth.

This constant pressure will increase the rate at which the bony ridges are reabsorbed. The loss of bone will make it increasingly difficult to comfortably wear the dentures and will result in them becoming progressively looser and ill-fitting.

Why Sleep in Dentures Isn’t Wise

This bone loss has another side effect, as it will change the overall dimensions of the face, decreasing the distance between the upper and lower jaw, providing less support for the facial muscles in the cheeks and lips and this effect can be prematurely aging.

In addition, if the dentures are not kept immaculately clean they can become a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the risk of infections, including fungal infections.

In older people, wearing dentures while sleeping can be particularly unwise, increasing the risk of aspiration and the likelihood of developing pneumonia.

Leaving dentures out overnight will give the gums a chance to recover, keeping them in better condition, but many people hate the fact they have lost teeth and do not want to be without them. This is perfectly understandable and there is another possible option for dealing with tooth loss.

Replacing Dentures with a Fixed Arch of Teeth

Using the very latest technology, Dr. Navid Rahmani of Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery, can replace your loose and badly fitting dentures with a beautiful fixed arch of teeth. You won’t have to worry about taking them out or sleep in dentures at all as they will be permanently fixed in place with your new dental implants.

What are Dental Implants and How Do They Work?

Dental implants artificially replace teeth in a way that is very long-lasting and they are extremely stable and strong. An implant consists of a titanium post that is screwed into the jawbone.

The beauty of this is that the post is able to integrate with the bone and over the course of a few months new bone cells will begin to grown on and around the post, resulting in it becoming firmly embedded in the bone. Once this has happened, the post will be strong enough to support a new tooth and at the same time the implant post will prevent any further jawbone loss.

By using multiple dental implants, Dr. Rahmani can design a new fixed bridge replacing an entire arch of teeth. The bridge is either screwed onto or cemented onto the dental implants and can only be removed by a dentist. You won’t have to worry about sleep in dentures ever again and you can just enjoy the sensation of having teeth that will feel just like your own.

Dental Implants – Excellent Option in NYC

This amazing technology has already helped many people worldwide and it is thoroughly tested and very safe. It can be an excellent option for anyone who don’t want to sleep in dentures as well as for anyone facing tooth loss. The really nice thing about dental implants is that they can be great for anyone who is a little older as you only need to be in reasonable dental and general health to benefit from treatment.

If you are considering seeing a dentist about advanced dental implant surgery, then you might have wondered who to see. Nowadays lots of general dentists’ offer this service, but you really should go and see a specialist dentist such as a periodontist if you want to get the best and most long-lasting results and are also interested in receiving more comfortable treatment.

When to See a Periodontist?

The reason for this is because a periodontist is a specialist dentist. In addition to completing dental training to become a general dentist, a specialist dentist has chosen to study for several more years in order to become qualified. Dr.Navid Rahmani is a board certified periodontist with extensive experience and training in dental implant surgery. As well as placing all sorts of dental implant systems, Dr.Rahmani is able to carry out far more complex procedures that are often necessary in preparation for dental implants. These include procedures to treat any active gum disease or periodontal disease, as well as specialised treatments to repair the damage caused by periodontal disease or some other trauma that has affected the jawbone and gums.

Healthy Jawbone before Advanced Dental Implant Surgery

Not only is it essential to make sure that you don’t have any signs of active gum disease before you have dental implants, but it’s important to ensure that you have sufficient bone to support the implants. Additionally, by recontouring and replacing lost bone and building up gum tissue in areas where it may be defective, Dr. Rahmani can ensure that your dental implants look aesthetically pleasing which is an important factor to take into consideration because this is a procedure that will last you for many years. After making sure that you have a sufficient amount of bone and that your gums are nicely shaped, Dr. Rahmani will carefully plan your advanced dental implant surgery using latest techniques.

Why Implant Surgery Must Be Carefully Planned in Advance

Pre-planning helps ensure that your advanced dental implant surgery will go smoothly and that the whole procedure will be as quick as possible. This planning stage is carried out before you come in for the surgery using the results from advanced diagnostic technology that include a cone beam CT scan and digital dental x-rays. It is essential to have a CT scan completed before you have dental implants, although not every dentist offers this service or will not have the equipment on-site. A CT scan enables your implant dentist to plan your surgery with an incredible degree of accuracy so that when the time comes they will know exactly where to place your dental implant for optimal results.

How to Avoid Dental Implant Complications

Here at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery, Dr. Rahmani uses guided surgery to place dental implants which means a stent is premade before your advanced dental implant surgery to his exact specifications. It is a template that is used to identify the precise position for your dental implants, ensuring that the actual surgery is minimally invasive. By keeping surgery to a minimum, healing is faster and more comfortable and many people are amazed to find that they have little to no side effects or discomfort after dental implant treatment with Dr. Rahmani. Then of course there is the peace of mind and confidence that comes from knowing you have chosen a specialist to place your dental implants and that you are receiving the best possible treatment. After all, why compromise on something as important as your dental health.
