Dr. Rahmani is a nationally recognized as America’s Top Periodontist, one of the best periodontal disease specialists in the region. He is an award winning, top periodontist, periodontal specialist and contributor to a prominent media outlets. Dr. Rahmani provides a full range of periodontal procedures to treat all the forms of gum disease including Advanced Periodontal Disease.

Flossing a Waste of Time?

Here at Manhattan Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Midtown Manhattan we are pretty horrified by the idea that flossing could be a waste of time. The idea has been put forward by a leading dental expert in the UK who suggests this might be the case, but not because it is ineffective.

The reason they are suggesting this is because most people do not floss properly, if at all, and their argument is that by flossing incorrectly people could be doing their gums more harm than good. Most importantly, they also point out that by failing to floss correctly there is the risk that gums will be damaged or that the chances of developing gum disease will be increased.

If you don’t do not floss your teeth properly then you are at much greater risk of needing to see a good periodontist NYC such as Dr. Navid Rahmani for treatment for periodontal disease.

Why Flossing Your Teeth Is Important

There is no question that when you have the proper flossing technique then it is probably the most effective way to clean in between your teeth, but the problem is that flossing does require a high level of dexterity that many people simply don’t have. If someone flosses incorrectly there is a risk that instead of removing plaque and food debris, they could be pushing it down in between their teeth and into the gums, leaving this debris in the perfect position to create problems.

Another common mistake is using a piece of dental floss to saw in between the teeth as this can traumatize the gums and may even cause them to recede( Read more: gum recession). So what is the solution?

Correct Flossing Technique

One solution is to learn how to use dental floss correctly. Any hygienist will be able to demonstrate the correct technique and can provide guidance on learning how to floss properly. Sometimes using a different dental floss will make things easier. There is a bit of a knack to flossing which is why a practical demonstration can be so useful.

Alternatives to Flossing in NYC

If you know you cannot get on with flossing or have limited dexterity, then there are alternatives as you can use interdental brushes or air or water flossers. Interdental brushes are tiny toothbrushes that fit in between your teeth and these can be very easy to use and they also provide stimulation for your gums which will help keep the gum tissue strong and healthy. They come in a variety of sizes and you may need to use more than one size to reach in between all the teeth in your mouth.

Another alternative is to use water or air flossers that work by forcing water or air in between your teeth and these can be very effective. These are a more expensive option than interdental brushes but should last for a very long time.

What Happens if You Don’t Floss?

If you don’t do anything then you are at much greater risk of needing to see a good periodontist such as Dr. Navid Rahmani of New York periodontal clinic for treatment for periodontal disease.

Gum disease is most often caused by poor oral hygiene and it can be incredibly destructive. Ultimately you could lose teeth and you will put your general health at risk. You could end up spending hours in the dental chair and treatment may need to be ongoing. It is far simpler to find some method of cleaning in between your teeth that you know you can commit to using.

People with dentures will often sleep in dentures, imagining that it will not do any harm. Unfortunately this isn’t the case and wearing dentures continuously can place pressure on the gums and on the bony ridge beneath them that used to support teeth.

This constant pressure will increase the rate at which the bony ridges are reabsorbed. The loss of bone will make it increasingly difficult to comfortably wear the dentures and will result in them becoming progressively looser and ill-fitting.

Why Sleep in Dentures Isn’t Wise

This bone loss has another side effect, as it will change the overall dimensions of the face, decreasing the distance between the upper and lower jaw, providing less support for the facial muscles in the cheeks and lips and this effect can be prematurely aging.

In addition, if the dentures are not kept immaculately clean they can become a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the risk of infections, including fungal infections.

In older people, wearing dentures while sleeping can be particularly unwise, increasing the risk of aspiration and the likelihood of developing pneumonia.

Leaving dentures out overnight will give the gums a chance to recover, keeping them in better condition, but many people hate the fact they have lost teeth and do not want to be without them. This is perfectly understandable and there is another possible option for dealing with tooth loss.

Replacing Dentures with a Fixed Arch of Teeth

Using the very latest technology, Dr. Navid Rahmani of Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery, can replace your loose and badly fitting dentures with a beautiful fixed arch of teeth. You won’t have to worry about taking them out or sleep in dentures at all as they will be permanently fixed in place with your new dental implants.

What are Dental Implants and How Do They Work?

Dental implants artificially replace teeth in a way that is very long-lasting and they are extremely stable and strong. An implant consists of a titanium post that is screwed into the jawbone.

The beauty of this is that the post is able to integrate with the bone and over the course of a few months new bone cells will begin to grown on and around the post, resulting in it becoming firmly embedded in the bone. Once this has happened, the post will be strong enough to support a new tooth and at the same time the implant post will prevent any further jawbone loss.

By using multiple dental implants, Dr. Rahmani can design a new fixed bridge replacing an entire arch of teeth. The bridge is either screwed onto or cemented onto the dental implants and can only be removed by a dentist. You won’t have to worry about sleep in dentures ever again and you can just enjoy the sensation of having teeth that will feel just like your own.

Dental Implants – Excellent Option in NYC

This amazing technology has already helped many people worldwide and it is thoroughly tested and very safe. It can be an excellent option for anyone who don’t want to sleep in dentures as well as for anyone facing tooth loss. The really nice thing about dental implants is that they can be great for anyone who is a little older as you only need to be in reasonable dental and general health to benefit from treatment.

If you have recently been told you have gingivitis then you may be concerned, and with good reason. Gingivitis is a mild type of gum disease that is caused by a bacterial infection in your gums. It can cause your gums to recede or to become red, swollen and inflamed and it is highly likely they will bleed slightly when you brush or floss. Even though this is a relatively mild form of gum disease, you do need to take it very seriously and it does require prompt gingivitis treatment to prevent it from developing into a much more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis that can cause early tooth loss and which has the ability to negatively affect your overall health.

What Causes Gingivitis?

The most common reason for developing gingivitis is poor dental hygiene. If you haven’t been quite as vigilant as you should have about twice daily brushing and once-a-day flossing then you are far more likely to need gingivitis treatment. Failing to clean your teeth thoroughly will allow plaque to build up on your teeth and gums. Plaque contains bacteria that cause gingivitis and it can soon harden into calculus, which is a very hard substance that can only be removed by having your teeth professionally cleaned. It takes just a couple of days for plaque to harden into calculus and this can also happen if you regularly clean your teeth but are missing out certain areas of your mouth. The longer plaque and calculus are able to remain on your teeth, the greater the risk of infection and irritation in your gums. As well as poor oral hygiene habits, there are a number of other risk factors associated with gingivitis.

Who Is More at Risk of Developing Gingivitis?

You are more likely to need gingivitis treatment if you smoke, are older or have a disease that affects your immunity, for example HIV/AIDS or leukemia. Diabetics are more likely to develop gingivitis and aging can increase your risk (Read also: Diabetes and Gum Health). Women are more at risk of developing gingivitis at certain times due to hormonal changes. Wearing a poorly fitting dental appliance that traps plaque can increase your chances of developing gingivitis, as can taking certain medications that may cause dry mouth, a condition where you can’t produce enough saliva to keep your mouth comfortable. The good news is, your gum disease has been caught early enough to be completely cured.

Gingivitis Treatment in New York

Your first step is to visit a good periodontist and you can phone up and make an appointment without requiring a referral from your dentist. You will find Dr. Navid Rahmani is an extremely gentle and thorough periodontist and he will be able to examine your gums to discover the extent of the infection. The next step will be to plan gingivitis treatment which is normally to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums. If the infection is very mild he might suggest a regular scale and clean, but quite often gums will benefit from being deep cleaned, a treatment that will remove more bacteria and which is able to treat any tooth root surfaces that may have become exposed through gum recession. By following his aftercare instructions very carefully, you can ensure the disease will be completely eradicated.

Gum disease is a huge problem and without prompt treatment by a periodontist, such as Dr. Navid Rahmani, then there is a real risk that it could lead to tooth loss. Untreated gum disease also has the potential to affect general health and has been linked to many serious health conditions. By preventing gum disease you can help preserve your natural teeth and protect your health. Luckily, good gum health is quite easy to achieve and even though gum disease is common, you don’t have to develop it.

1. Learn How Gum Disease Can Develop

Preventing gum disease important as it’s a bacterial infection and is generally caused by poor oral hygiene, although some people with conditions that affect their immune system are more at risk. If you fail to brush and floss, plaque can quickly build up over your teeth and gums and plaque consists largely of bacteria. Even worse, plaque can soon harden into calculus, a substance that is so hard that it can only be removed during a professional cleaning. The bacteria in calculus produce toxins that infect and inflame the gums, initially causing an early form of gum disease called gingivitis. At this stage treatment can still save your gums and your teeth, but soon gingivitis will develop into periodontitis. This is much more serious and at this stage both your teeth and your general health are at risk.

2. Make Sure You Don’t Develop Gum Disease

Preventative dental care is by far your best option and is much more cost-effective in the longer term, and it really is very simple. All you need do is visit your dentist on a regular basis for professional checkups and cleanings, or if you prefer you can have regular periodontal evaluations at a periodontal office, such as Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery.

Regular assessments will help detect any small changes to the condition of your gums so action can be taken straight away for preventing gum disease and clear up any signs of infection. Your dentist or periodontist will carefully probe your gums to measure the depth of the pockets in between your gums and your teeth. These measurements are recorded so any improvements or deterioration in your gum health is easy to see. They will also be looking for any signs of active disease such as receding gums, gums that bleed easily when gently probed, or gums that look swollen or red.

3. Learn About Treating and Preventing Gum Disease

A professional scale and polish is another very important step in preventing gum disease and most people will need to have their teeth professionally cleaned every six months. Some people might need to have their teeth cleaned more frequently, for example anyone with a medical condition that increases their risk of gum disease, or sometimes pregnancy can increase the risk of gum disease or will worsen any signs of this disease that are already present.

Great professional preventative dental care can only do so much and it is essential that you look after your teeth and gums at home. This only involves cleaning your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes each time and flossing once-a-day, a simple routine that will take less than ten minutes. Your reward will be healthy teeth and gums and quite possibly lower medical bills.
