It is highly unlikely that anybody would actually choose to have teeth extracted, and most dentists will do everything possible to try to preserve their patient’s teeth for as long as possible.

But sometimes a tooth may be too badly damaged to save, and in this case it will need to be removed and a suitable method of tooth replacement nyc can be selected.

When faced with this situation, most people will imagine there is only really one method of extracting or pulling out a tooth, but there is an alternative and that is to find a dentist or periodontist such as Dr. Navid Rahmani who has sufficient training and technique to carry out

what is called an atraumatic tooth extraction.

Why Choose an Atraumatic Tooth Extraction?

A conventional type of tooth extraction is focused on merely removing the tooth without necessarily preserving the bone surrounding the damaged tooth. An atraumatic tooth extraction at midtown east oral surgery uses specific techniques and specialized tools to make sure the tooth is extracted while preserving the surrounding bone and gum tissue. This is very important, particularly if the tooth is to be replaced with a dental implant.

Every tooth socket has four walls, but the outer wall which is nearest to the lips or cheeks tends to be thinner than the rest. When standard extraction techniques are used it is easily damaged whereas an atraumatic tooth extraction will remove the tooth without affecting this outer wall, preserving the maximum amount of bone.

Why is it Important to Preserve the Tooth Socket?

If you intend to have a dental implant then it will need to be surrounded by a certain amount of healthy bone. This ensures the implant post is able to fully integrate with the jawbone and that it is strong enough to support a new tooth. If there isn’t enough bone then it’s necessary to undergo an additional procedure called a bone graft which uses artificial bone to help stimulate the body to produce new bone cells.

A bone graft can sometimes be placed at the same time as a tooth extraction or it might be necessary for it to be placed afterwards, once the empty tooth socket has healed. Once the graft is in position then it is often necessary to leave it to heal before placing the dental implant. All this takes time, and adds to the cost of the overall procedure. It is far more effective to try to preserve a patient’s jawbone and to place the dental implant as soon after extraction as possible.

A Kinder Way to Take Out Teeth

In addition, an atraumatic tooth extraction can be more pleasant for patients who should experience less physical and psychological discomfort both during and after the tooth extraction.

The recovery time following the tooth extraction can also be shorter.

Dr. Rahmani is a nationally recognized as America’s Top Periodontist, one of the best periodontal disease specialists in the region. He is an award winning, top periodontist, periodontal specialist and contributor to a prominent media outlets. Dr. Rahmani provides a full range of periodontal procedures to treat all the forms of gum disease including Advanced Periodontal Disease.

Our state of the art facility equipped with the most advanced periodontal equipment available in USA including latest lasers & high precision microscopes. We work with top dental labs in NYC and use only highest quality dental components available on the market today.

Flossing a Waste of Time?

Here at Manhattan Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Midtown Manhattan we are pretty horrified by the idea that flossing could be a waste of time. The idea has been put forward by a leading dental expert in the UK who suggests this might be the case, but not because it is ineffective.

The reason they are suggesting this is because most people do not floss properly, if at all, and their argument is that by flossing incorrectly people could be doing their gums more harm than good. Most importantly, they also point out that by failing to floss correctly there is the risk that gums will be damaged or that the chances of developing gum disease will be increased.

If you don’t do not floss your teeth properly then you are at much greater risk of needing to see a good periodontist NYC such as Dr. Navid Rahmani for treatment for periodontal disease.

Why Flossing Your Teeth Is Important

There is no question that when you have the proper flossing technique then it is probably the most effective way to clean in between your teeth, but the problem is that flossing does require a high level of dexterity that many people simply don’t have. If someone flosses incorrectly there is a risk that instead of removing plaque and food debris, they could be pushing it down in between their teeth and into the gums, leaving this debris in the perfect position to create problems.

Another common mistake is using a piece of dental floss to saw in between the teeth as this can traumatize the gums and may even cause them to recede( Read more: gum recession). So what is the solution?

Correct Flossing Technique

One solution is to learn how to use dental floss correctly. Any hygienist will be able to demonstrate the correct technique and can provide guidance on learning how to floss properly. Sometimes using a different dental floss will make things easier. There is a bit of a knack to flossing which is why a practical demonstration can be so useful.

Alternatives to Flossing in NYC

If you know you cannot get on with flossing or have limited dexterity, then there are alternatives as you can use interdental brushes or air or water flossers. Interdental brushes are tiny toothbrushes that fit in between your teeth and these can be very easy to use and they also provide stimulation for your gums which will help keep the gum tissue strong and healthy. They come in a variety of sizes and you may need to use more than one size to reach in between all the teeth in your mouth.

Another alternative is to use water or air flossers that work by forcing water or air in between your teeth and these can be very effective. These are a more expensive option than interdental brushes but should last for a very long time.

What Happens if You Don’t Floss?

If you don’t do anything then you are at much greater risk of needing to see a good periodontist such as Dr. Navid Rahmani of New York periodontal clinic for treatment for periodontal disease.

Gum disease is most often caused by poor oral hygiene and it can be incredibly destructive. Ultimately you could lose teeth and you will put your general health at risk. You could end up spending hours in the dental chair and treatment may need to be ongoing. It is far simpler to find some method of cleaning in between your teeth that you know you can commit to using.

What is Periodontal Oral Surgery?

Periodontal surgery is any procedure used to restore and regenerate damaged periodontal structures. These periodontal structures include the gums around your teeth, the periodontal ligaments which help hold the teeth in their sockets and the bone surrounding your teeth.

Periodontal midtown east oral surgery will not cure periodontal disease but it can help increase the life expectancy of your teeth. Periodontal disease cannot be completely eliminated and the main aim of treatment is to help control it. Midtown east oral surgery treats any tissue loss caused by this disease and reconstructing gum and bone tissue should make it easier to look after your teeth and gums on a daily basis.

Why Might Midtown East Oral Surgery Be Necessary?

Periodontal disease or advanced gum disease is highly destructive. It can cause the loss of gum tissue, the periodontal ligaments and bone. As it progresses, periodontal disease causes the gums to pull away from the teeth creating the pockets in between the teeth and the gums. This enables the infection to build up and provides ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive. Treatments to control periodontal disease can help eliminate most bacteria in these deep pockets, but the gums are likely to remain detached or will shrink away from the teeth.

Preparing for Periodontal Surgery

Your first step is to visit a periodontist like Dr. Navid Rahmani at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery in NYC. Dr. Rahmani will be able to examine your mouth and can formulate a treatment plan to help control the infection in your gums. Treatments that may be used include scaling and root planing and deep pockets can be cleaned using the very latest laser therapy. Once the inflammation has been brought under control, Dr. Rahmani might need to stabilize any loose teeth prior to your midtown east oral surgery as this will help the overall healing process. The next step will be to reevaluate your gums and their response to this initial therapy. At the same time you’ll need to take steps to maintain meticulous oral hygiene at home to help maintain these results. The next stage will be to plan surgical therapy.

Midtown East Oral Surgery: Which Types of Surgery Might Be Used?

Nowadays the techniques used during midtown east oral surgery are increasingly sophisticated and can help repair and regenerate soft and hard tissues. Any teeth that couldn’t be saved and have been extracted can be replaced with the very latest dental implants. The overall objective of surgery is to help eliminate any deep gum pockets and to regenerate any lost tissues to provide better form and function and of course to make sure your teeth and gums look good once treatment is completed.

It is remarkable that we are able to regenerate periodontal tissues in this way through techniques such as guided tissue regeneration and the use of sophisticated growth factors that help prompt the body to regenerate its own tissues. The results are predictable and surgery should be uneventful, provided patients to follow their doctor’s instructions to the letter. Afterwards it is vital to make sure you attend any follow-up appointments for further treatment and re-evaluation and of course you do need to ensure your oral hygiene at home is the very best it can be.

Most New Year’s resolutions involve getting healthier, saving money or perhaps quitting a bad habit such as smoking, so it might seem a bit strange to resolve to have healthy gums next year. But a periodontal evaluation in Midtown Manhattan could be one of the best things you could do for not only your dental health, but also your general health and it could save you money in medical bills in the longer term.

Why Healthy Gums Matter

When imagining a healthy mouth, many people think of strong, white and healthy teeth, completely overlooking the fact that these teeth are supported by the gums. It doesn’t matter how good your teeth look if they aren’t supported properly by healthy and strong gums. Ideally, gums fit quite snugly around the teeth, sealing out bacteria in the mouth, preventing damage to the ligaments attached to your teeth and which secure them in the bony sockets. When gum disease (gum disease signs and symptoms) becomes sufficiently well advanced, mouth bacteria also have the potential to destroy bone surrounding your teeth.

What Should Healthy Gums Look like?

Healthy gums should be a nice, pale pink color, will be firm to touch and won’t bleed when you brush or floss (Read also: Gums Bleed When You Brush Teeth?). If you notice your gums are looking puffy or red, are perhaps swollen or bleed frequently when you brush then it’s possible you could have gum disease and this is where a yearly periodontal evaluation with a good periodontist such as Dr. Navid Rahmani can be invaluable. By having regular evaluations, you’ll be ensuring your gums are healthy and strong, supporting and protecting your teeth. The great thing about seeing a periodontist is that you can be sure you’ll be getting the highest quality examination and if you do need any treatment then it will be the most up-to-date and effective available today.

How Do Healthy Gums Help Protect My General Health?

These days there is an increasing amount of evidence showing strong links between healthy gums and a healthy body. In cases where people have advanced gum disease or periodontal disease, it’s been found they can be more at risk of developing serious health conditions, or if they already have health problems then gum disease can make it worse. While the exact links between gum health and general health aren’t quite known yet, there have been a sufficient number of clinical studies to show that healthy gums are important. One of the best investigated links is between gum health and diabetes as diabetics often have gum problems.

Bleeding Gums and Diabetes

When you have advanced gum disease, your gums often bleed frequently when brushed and these wounds are the perfect entry point for mouth bacteria to get into your bloodstream. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition (Read also: Periodontal Conditions Prevention) and these bacteria can then travel freely around your body creating new sites of inflammation. Diabetes is also an inflammatory disease and the presence of periodontal disease can make blood sugar levels harder to control. This is especially bad news for diabetics as poorly controlled blood sugar levels increase the amount of glucose in saliva, providing even more fuel for mouth bacteria.

If you even suspect you might have problems with your gums then now is a good time to contact Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery to book that evaluation.

Severe gum disease isn’t just an American problem, as a recently released review found it to be the sixth most prevalent health condition in the world. This particular study looked at data from 37 different countries, and found severe periodontitis affected 743 million people in the world. Globally, the prevalence of severe periodontitis was 11.2% between 1990 and 2010. However your risk does increase with age, and interestingly this disease is more prevalent in the third and fourth decades, with risks peeking around the age of the 38. This was the first ever global assessment of periodontal disease and it shows the challenges faced by every single one of us in keeping our teeth and gums healthy and free from disease.

Regular Preventative Dental Care Really Does Work in Reducing Your Risk

One of the reasons we like patients to visit us at regular intervals is to check for any signs of gum disease. This is a bacterial infection that can easily cause tooth loss if not promptly treated. It also has far more serious ramifications for general health, as severe gum disease or periodontal disease has been associated with many other general health conditions.

We take any signs of gum disease extremely seriously and can recommend suitable treatments to help clear up this condition as soon as possible, or which can manage more advanced gum disease that might not be completely curable. That’s right, we did say it might not be completely curable, as periodontal disease can become chronic which means you’ll need regular treatment to help control the condition rather than eradicate it completely.

Hopefully things will never get to this stage for you, especially if you have regular checkups at the Cosmetic Dentistry Center. Provided we catch this disease early enough, it’s usually very easily cured as most cases are caused by being a little bit lax over your oral hygiene and failing to remove the bacteria that build up each day on your teeth and gums.

The early stages of gum disease often cause the very few if any symptoms, and this is why regular professional dental care is so important. If you do have any signs, it’s likely to be that your gums bleed whenever you brush or floss or perhaps they feel a bit sore or tender or even look redder than normal.

Treating Early Gum Disease

At this stage, professional dental cleanings can help thoroughly remove all the bacteria from your teeth, giving your gums a chance to heal more easily. Sometimes a normal professional cleaning will be sufficient, but if the infection is more deep-seated, then we might need to deep clean your gums using a process called scaling and planing. This cleans your teeth in the same way as a normal professional cleaning, but takes things a step further cleaning right down to any tooth roots that have been exposed as the disease begins to destroy your gums, causing the gums to pull away from your teeth. With proper dental care at home, it is possible to reverse the earliest signs of gum disease completely. If the disease has progressed then we might want to see you every few months for continuing treatment, and to make sure the current treatment plan is proving effective.

When Might I Need Crown Lengthening?

If you have broken off a tooth right near the gum line, then it could be tricky for your dentist to

crown or a filling. In order to do this it is necessary to remove some of the gum tissue and

sometimes the bone covering up the tooth.

How is this done?

If you do need crown lengthening, then you will need to see a periodontist, for example Dr.

Navid Rahmani at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery. Dr. Rahmani will review your

dental history and may need to take dental x-rays to plan your surgery. This treatment can often

be carried out using the very latest laser technology. Dental lasers are extremely safe and

treatment is much more comfortable. Crown lengthening with a dental laser is often more

accurate as it will precisely cut the bone or gum tissue. The gums often heal more quickly after

laser surgery and there is less swelling and discomfort during the healing period.

Once the correct amount of gum and possibly bone has been removed, the gums are left to heal

for some time before the tooth can be permanently restored with a filling or a crown. If the tooth

needs a crown then you will be provided with a temporary crown to protect the tooth during the

healing period.

What about Crown Lengthening for Other Reasons?

You don’t necessarily need to have broken a tooth to benefit from crown lengthening as this

treatment is also useful for correcting a gummy smile. This is where the teeth are covered up by

an excess of gum tissue which is particularly visible whenever you smile, even though they may

be a perfectly reasonable length underneath. Removing the excess gum tissue with a laser can

create a more appealing smile and crown lengthening is often done for cosmetic purposes.

What is the Ideal Gum Line?

Ideally, whenever you smile you should not show very much gum tissue. The gums surrounding

your teeth should look balanced and even with contours that complement the shape of your upper

lip. Often people with an excess of gum tissue will feel reluctant to smile, feeling their teeth look

unattractive.

If you do have a gummy smile then it is important to get a proper diagnosis from your dentist or

periodontist. Although it is often caused by an excess of gum tissue there could be other reasons

for this condition. Sometimes it can be caused by overactive facial muscles which pull the upper

lip up too far. It can also be caused by abnormal growth of the teeth or bones. These can all be

corrected but treatment may be slightly different.

If you visit your dentist regularly then you will be familiar with regular dental cleanings. These are great for keeping teeth and gums healthy and in good condition, and your normal dental cleaning is a preventative dental treatment. It’s quite different if you require scaling and root planing procedure at this is a more specialized procedure that helps to treat periodontitis or gum disease. It is a treatment often used by Dr. Navid Rahmani to help clear up the gum infections and it often forms part of an ongoing periodontal maintenance plan.

Scaling and Root Planing: How Might It Help You?

Scaling and root planing procedure deep cleans your gums, taking things much further than a normal dental cleaning. With an ordinary dental cleaning, only your teeth are scaled and polished, but with scaling and root planing, tooth roots that have become exposed are also thoroughly cleaned. As a side effect of gum disease, the gums gradually begin to pull back from the teeth, causing gum recession and exposing the tooth roots. This also creates deep pockets in between the gums and the teeth that can be very difficult to keep clean. The aim of scaling and root planing is to thoroughly clean out these pockets, helping the gums to fit more closely to the teeth as they gradually heal and become stronger.

During scaling and root planing procedure, your teeth and tooth roots are carefully scaled, removing any tartar buildup. Afterwards the exposed tooth roots are planed or gently smoothed, a procedure that helps to make it easier for gum tissue to heal by making it harder for bacteria to stick to the smooth surfaces.

How Laser Periodontal Therapy Treats Gums Disease

Scaling and root planing procedure will often be combined with laser dentistry, particularly as Dr. Rahmani has one of the most advanced dental lasers available today. This helps to greatly enhance the quality of the treatment in a way that is extremely gentle and non-invasive. A dental laser is an excellent way to help eliminate even more bacteria as it gently sterilizes the area being treated. Additionally, a laser can be used to remove any tissues that are too badly damaged to heal and it provides such a high degree of accuracy that more of the healthy tissues can be left intact. Another nice thing about laser dentistry is that it helps the healing process. The energy of a laser helps to minimize any bleeding and swelling, making healing faster and more comfortable.

When Should You Consider Scaling and Root Planing Procedure?

If your gums have begun to bleed frequently or you have noticed that your teeth look longer than you remember, it could be a great idea to book a periodontal evaluation with a good periodontist. You don’t need a referral from your dentist to make an appointment with Dr. Rahmani at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery. The specialized care provided by a periodontal dental office could help save your teeth. Periodontal disease is a serious condition that has the potential to affect your general health so it’s important not to ignore any possible symptoms.

Gum recession is a surprisingly common problem, and many people don’t realize they have this issue until their teeth begin to look significantly longer than before. The problem results in the gum tissue surrounding the teeth gradually becoming worn away or beginning to pull back, exposing more of the actual length of the tooth or even its root. Quite often gum recession can be a sign of gum disease, and if this is the case then it will require urgent treatment from one of our dentists at the Manhattan Periodontics and Implant Dentistry Center. Neglecting to find out the cause of your gum recession could mean the problem will continue to progress, and will eventually affect the bone structure surrounding your teeth, and ultimately it may even result in tooth loss.

First Signs of Gum Recession

One of the first signs of gum recession is noticing your teeth look longer than you remember, but you may also notice your teeth begin to become more sensitive to hot and cold. This is because gum recession exposes the root of the tooth which isn’t covered in a hard layer of protective enamel. Instead the tooth root is covered in a much softer substance called cementum that is easily worn away.

Why Do Gums Recede?

It can be due to a variety of reasons including:

Brushing your teeth too hard, as this can wear away the tooth enamel and the delicate gum tissue. If you are brushing your teeth too hard then we can advise you on the best way to brush them to avoid any further damage, and are likely to recommend you use a soft bristled toothbrush that is kinder to your gums.

It may be down to your genes, as some people are more likely to develop gum disease. In fact studies have shown that up to a third of the population could be more at risk of developing gum disease, even if they have good dental hygiene.

If you are lax about your dental care, then you are more at risk of developing gum disease. This causes the gums to become infected and inflamed, gradually resulting in them pulling back from your teeth, creating large pockets around the teeth which are perfect for collecting more disease causing bacteria. We have lots of different treatments available to deal with the effects of gum disease, and to hopefully eradicate all signs of this common condition.

Grinding and clenching or bruxism can also put pressure on your teeth and gums, causing gum recession. This condition is often easily resolved through wearing a night guard. If you think you might have this problem then ask us about having a custom-made night guard to help protect your teeth and gums from any further damage.

If you smoke you are more at risk of developing gum disease as tobacco users often have more problems with sticky plaque and calculus that cause this condition. One solution might be to quit smoking, or to book more frequent professional cleanings with one of our hygienists.

If your teeth don’t bite together correctly then it can place too much force on your teeth and gums, causing gum recession. We can assess your bite and will recommend the most suitable treatment to correct this problem. This might mean crowning or adjusting your teeth, or orthodontic treatment to reposition them.

If you do have receding gums then make an appointment to come and see us as soon as you can. Our dentists at the Manhattan Periodontics and Implant Dentistry Center will diagnose the reason for this issue and can recommend the most suitable treatment options.

Periodontal disease is a destructive condition that gradually destroys gum tissue, the ligaments holding your teeth in their sockets and the bone around them. Gum disease is also incredibly common and it’s estimated nearly half the adult population in the US have some form of periodontal disease. This might be a mild gum inflammation, a condition called gingivitis or it could be the much more serious form of the disease which is called periodontitis. While this condition might be common, you don’t have to develop periodontal disease and you can take action to greatly lower your risk.

Get Proper Dental Checkups with Periodontist NYC

Are you guilty of failing to attend regular dental checkups? Unfortunately many people ignore reminders or perhaps aren’t currently registered with a periodontist NYC. Attending regular dental checkups is a great way to decrease your risk of periodontal disease and there are several reasons why.

Gum Disease Is Often Called a Silent Disease

Your periodontist NYC will be able to detect any early signs of gum inflammation that you probably haven’t even noticed which is why this condition is often called a silent disease. To do this they will gently probe around your gums and will check the depth of any gum pockets that might be developing. Healthy gums fit snugly around your teeth and have a gum pocket depth of less than 3 mm. Gums with pockets greater than this depth or which bleed when gently probed may well be inflamed. Another symptom that’s easy to ignore is bleeding gums so if you saw blood in the bathroom sink this morning then that’s your signal to take action.

Professional Cleanings

Professional cleanings are another easy way to lower your risk as this removes any hardened calculus which could otherwise inflame your gums. At the same time your periodontist NYC can give you advice and information on how to look after your teeth at home.

Oral Care at Home Is Essential for Healthy Gums

In between your checkups and professional cleanings make sure you look after your teeth and gums at home. A good cleaning regime should only take 10 minutes out of your day and is far quicker and easier than seeking treatment for advanced periodontal disease.

Lifestyle Changes That Can Help Your Gums

If you smoke then seriously consider quitting as smokers are much more likely to develop periodontal disease than non-smokers. This is due to the way nicotine affects the gum tissue, making it much harder for it to heal and repair. At the same time take a look at your overall health, as periodontal disease has been closely linked to several major health conditions. While the exact link may not yet be fully understood, making sure you are in good overall health will help protect your gum health and vice versa.

Get Professional Dental Care for Any Symptoms of Gum Disease

If you think you might have periodontal disease or have been diagnosed by your dentist with this condition, consider visiting a periodontist such as Dr. Navid Rahmani at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery. This will ensure you get the best possible treatment to hopefully cure this condition or to control it, minimizing damage to your gums and reducing your risk of tooth loss.

Dr. Rahmani is a board certified Manhattan periodontist and Dental Implant Specialist. Our state of the art facility equipped with the most advanced periodontal equipment available in USA including latest lasers & high precision microscopes. We work with top dental labs in NYC and use only highest quality dental components available on the market today.

Who doesn’t want to feel healthy and to have a nice smile? Good gum health and general health…did you know the two are very closely connected? By looking after your gums, you are protecting your general health and vice versa. So just what is this connection…

Gum Disease Can affect Your General Health

Gum disease is a bacterial infection that can occur if you fail to brush and floss properly. This allows a sticky layer of plaque bacteria, called a biofilm, to build up over the surface of your teeth. Within just a very short while, plaque can harden into tartar which is an extremely hard substance that can only be removed during a professional cleaning.

The problem with both plaque and tartar is that the bacteria within them release toxins and it’s these toxins that will begin to inflame and infect your gums. One of the most common side effects of gum disease or periodontal disease is bleeding gums. This symptom has the ability to affect your general health and here’s why.

When your gums bleed they create an open pathway for the bacteria in your mouth to get into your bloodstream. Once inside your bloodstream, these bacteria can travel just about anywhere in your body. This is a problem for your general health, as gum disease is an inflammatory condition, and these bacteria can create new sites of inflammation throughout your body.

Gum Disease and General Health Conditions

The ability of gum disease to cause new sites of inflammation is a particular problem for inflammatory conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease and diabetes. The presence of these bacteria can increase your risk of developing these and other health conditions, or will worsen any diseases already present.

Diabetes is a particularly good example as diabetics are already more at risk of developing gum disease because poorly controlled blood sugar levels can lead to an increase of glucose in saliva. This is the perfect fuel for bacteria, enabling them to thrive and multiply and increasing the risk of gum disease. For a diabetic with gum disease, it can be harder to control blood sugar levels due to the presence of these bacteria within the bloodstream.

Achieve Good Gum Health – Great Periodontal Care

This is where specialized care can really help as an experienced periodontist like Dr. Navid Rahmani can provide the very periodontal treatment in NYC. Having a proper periodontal evaluation can be invaluable if you are more at risk of developing gum disease, or even if you just want to make sure you have good gum health. By carefully evaluating your current gum health, Dr. Rahmani can recommend suitable and highly specialized treatments if required.

When caught in its early stages, gum disease or gingivitis is easily curable but it is quite a different story if it is already progressed into periodontal disease which can become chronic. If this is the case, Dr. Rahmani of New York Periodontics will work with you to provide a suitable treatment plan and it’s likely your periodontal care will be ongoing to help control your periodontal disease and to protect your general health as much as possible.
