Conventional Dental Implants: Common Types of Implants

Conventional Dental Implants Common Types of Implants

If you have recently started researching dental implants, then you have probably discovered that in addition to conventional dental implants, there are a confusing number of different types of implants and techniques that can be used to replace your missing teeth. So which type is better and when should it be used?

Mini Dental Implant Placement

Conventional dental implants have a diameter of 3 mm or more whereas mini dental implants have a diameter of less than 3 mm. Mini dental implants tend to be used in situations where there isn’t sufficient room for a conventional sized implant so they can be good for replacing small front incisors. They are also commonly used to support dentures. The decreased size of the implant post does mean there is less surface area to bond with your jawbone, making the use of these implants only suitable in particular situations.

Immediate Implants vs Conventional Dental Implants

With immediate dental implants, you can have your implants inserted and will receive a new tooth or a set of teeth a very short while after surgery is completed. It’s not surprising that this is immensely appealing, but just like mini dental implants, immediate implants are only suitable in certain cases. Conventional dental implants need to be left to heal and integrate with the jawbone and immediate dental implants are no exception. The implant teeth that are fitted soon after surgery are temporary and are specially designed to make sure you don’t place excessive stress on the dental implants and that they cannot move while they heal. Once the implants have fully integrated with your jawbone, your temporary teeth will be replaced with your permanent teeth that will look and feel even better.

All On Four Dental Implant Procedure

This can be a great technique for securing loose dentures, particularly lower dentures. As the name suggests, you only need four dental implants to support a complete lower bridge. The dental implants are placed towards the front of the mouth where the bone is thicker and stronger, making this treatment is suitable for people who may have previously been told they didn’t have sufficient bone for conventional dental implants and would require a bone graft prior to treatment. The use of so few dental implants does make treatment very affordable but this technique is highly specialized so it’s important to make sure you choose an implant dentist with the training and experience needed for this procedure to be a complete success.
