Laser Dentistry Benefits | Gum DiseaseTreatment

Laser Dentistry Benefits | Gum DiseaseTreatment

One of the most common ways to treat gum disease is with a procedure called scaling and root planing. With advanced gum disease, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, exposing the tooth roots and as a result they can become covered in hardened plaque, a substance called tartar or calculus. Scaling and root planing is a bit like a conventional professional cleaning or prophylaxis but it deep cleans the gums. The aim of treatment is to remove the hardened calculus or tartar from teeth as well as from the exposed tooth root surfaces, using special ultrasonic hand tools that will loosen the calculus.

Using Laser Dentistry in Conjunction with Scaling and Root Planing

This treatment is very good, but by this stage it’s likely the gums are substantially infected with bacteria and scaling and root planing will not remove all of them. Using a laser in conjunction with this treatment can help sterilize the treated areas, eliminating bacteria in the deep gum pockets that are created as the gums pull away from the teeth. Getting rid of as many bacteria as possible gives the gums a better chance of fighting the infection so they can heal more easily. Afterwards the gums will begin to fit around the teeth more tightly so there is less risk of bacteria colonizing the gum pockets.

Benefits of Choosing a Dental Office That Offers Laser Dentistry

If you do require periodontal treatment for any reason, then it’s best to look for a dental office that has a laser. This is because there are quite a few benefits in having this newer technology. As mentioned earlier, a laser helps to kill bacteria and this is extremely important for increasing the efficacy of treatment. In addition, laser dentistry is extremely gentle and there is less need for anesthesia as any discomfort is minimal. The laser can accurately cut away any diseased tissue and as it does so it automatically seals any small blood vessels so there is less chance of infection and healing is much quicker with less swelling. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that many patients find much easier to tolerate than using a scalpel. Often appointment times are shorter than they would be if using more traditional dental treatments. Once treatment is completed there should be very little discomfort and often it’s possible to return to work the next day.

Safe yet Effective

Laser dentistry is extremely safe and Dr. Rahmani has received additional training in using a dental laser. Laser dentistry can also be useful in treating gummy smiles, where teeth are covered up with excess gum tissue. Using a laser to cut away the gum tissue is very accurate and the result can be a beautiful and more balanced smile.

Here at the Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery, we have one of the very latest dental lasers, the WaterlaseiPlus. Dr. NavidRahmani decided to invest in this laser for the benefit of his patients, as treating advanced gum disease with a dental laser has several clear advantages.
